Our DEIJ Committee Charge

Composition

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Committee will be comprised of representatives from faculty and staff of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). Input from undergraduate and graduate students will be sought on an ad hoc basis. 

 

Responsibilities

The DEIJ Committee will review and recommend policies and programs including the following, to the Department Chair and College as necessary: 

  • Gather information and resources to distribute and present to the department as appropriate 
  • Review teaching practices and provide recommendations for recognizing bias and creating inclusive learning environments 
  • Review curriculum to identify opportunities to incorporate content on how CEE has affected and can be used to increase societal equity  
  • Help foster a dialogue addressing how CEE has interacted with issues of social equity amongst faculty, staff, & students
  • Work with faculty to identify research areas within CEE that could help to support a more equitable and just society through the built and natural environment 
  • Identify recruitment and retention efforts for faculty, staff, and students that would lead to a more diverse department 
  • Develop a holistic approach to mentoring, wherein students and faculty are better connected to university resources and each other 
  • Develop ideas for events and other practices, including departmental listening sessions and seminars, to inform efforts to create a more inclusive, supporting, environment within the department for all faculty, staff, and students. 
  • Coordinate committee and department initiatives and activities with relevant College of Engineering and University initiatives and activities
